The Silver Angels are members of the Catholic Center community (single, married and widowed men and women on the plus side of 55 years of age). The participants perform outreach in support of the Catholic Center mission and enjoy fellowsnip activities.The Silver Angels gather most months for a monthly potluck luncheon at the Center Hall. A short business meeting or an informative program is presented. A few of the past presenters include Dr. DiPalma, a member and local podiatrist; Darrell Huckabee, a local author/humorist; and service dog owners and trainers.
The members embrace supporting the special needs of the Catholic Center community. One example is that they donate food and contribute funds for the annual collegiates’ alternative spring break trips. Students have expressed their appreciation and enjoyed sharing their experiences with the group.
In the past…
In conjunction with the monthly potluck luncheons, there are special themed events and activities like bingo in January and an authentic Mardi Gras party prior to Lent.
The Silver Angels have planned and taken day-long excursions. Examples include a guided tour of the Elberton area; a tour of the Kangaroo Conservation Center in north Georgia with lunch at Amicalola Falls state park; and trips to the Atlanta area to tour a mosque, visit a monastery, and more.
The Silver Angels have also planned and taken short overnight trips. An example is a 2-night outing to Hot Springs, GA and Calloway Gardens.
Each year the Silver Angels donate, package, and deliver 100 lunches to Daily Bread soup kitchen in downtown Athens.
The Silver Angels take leadership for special projects as the need arises. For instance, the group has led the Catholic Center community to donate 1100 boxes of items and then sent them to the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Another example is the collection of $10,679 worth of coupons for families of service members.
The members co-sponsor with the Catholic Center patriotic events, usually on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The morning agenda normally includes a 9 a.m. Mass, a ceremony at the flagpole, and a potluck brunch.
