What are the requirements of a sponsor?

Must be at least 16 years of age and not the parent of the person they are sponsoring

Must be in good standing in the Catholic Church as demonstrated by the following:

  • they have received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist in the Catholic Church.
  • their marriage is recognized as valid in the Catholic Church or they have never married.
  • they regularly attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and regularly receive the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation.

Sponsors/godparents must be registered in a Catholic parish and actively participating in the sacraments. An eligibility form must be completed once the sponsor has been determined. All sponsors who are registered at a parish other than the Catholic Center must have their priest’s signature verifying their good standing.

What are the expectations of a sponsor?

Depending on the needs of the person you are sponsoring and your schedule* you may find yourself:

  • attending several or all OCIA sessions (Mondays 6:30pm-7:45pm)
  • meeting for coffee
  • meeting for mass
  • meeting for other community activities

*Attendance is mandatory at all associated Rites of OCIA (more Rites are required for the unbaptized during the Lenten season)
